Message from the President

December 2021

To Members and friends of the British Schools & Universities Club of New York –

Welcome to the Club’s website, we hope you find the site user-friendly and informative.  Please browse the pictures from previous activities and delve into the History to learn more about the Club.   When New York City fully re-opens we will be hosting events again and we look forward to adding items to the calendar early in 2022.

We are a social club and we build our community through our events.  We usually enjoy a variety of activities throughout the year including the annual formal Dinner Dance, the Commonwealth Reception at India House and more informal events such as a Bangers & Mash dinner, curry brunches, Easter Monday brunch, monthly Club Tuesday evenings and bridge afternoons. We also host outdoor activities such as an annual cricket match at the Staten Island cricket club, hikes in the Hudson Valley, wine tours, museum and garden trips.

Our discussions are lively and can cover cultural, social, political and philosophical topics. And sport, of course. However, BSUC is at heart a social club, so while discourse should be open, it should also be respectful, polite and tolerant. We have a diverse membership and, as we do in life, we should always be mindful of the sensitivities of our fellow members, friends and colleagues.

Last year 2020 would have been the 125th Annual Dinner Dance incorporating our 21st Pride of the Century Award. Previous recipients of the Award have included Rosemary Harris, Sir Harold Evans, Sheridan Morley, Zoe Caldwell, Hayley Mills, Edward Rutherfurd, Jim Dale, Andrew Roberts, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Jane Greenwood, Katy Clark, Zadie Smith, Andy Byford and most recently, Dr. Paul Beresford Hill.

I am honoured to have been elected President in 2021 and I would like to thank the Board and the Committees for their extensive support and encouragement in all our activities.  We are maintaining social meetings via zoom, which have proved quite stimulating.  We hope you will join us soon and I look forward to meeting you when we restart our social activities in person.  In the meantime, stay safe.

My hearty greetings,

Geoffrey Baldwin
